Disciplined Emotions

Disciplined Emotions

Robert Tyre also known as ‘Bobby’ Jones Jr is one of golfing greats. Between 1920 and 1930, he won thirteen major championships and remains the only player ever to win all four majors in the same year before retiring from golf when he was 28-years old. But achieving that success did not come easy; Jones had to master himself—particularly his temper.
He began playing golf in 1907 when he was only five years old. At 14 he qualifies for the U.S armature championship, but he did not win that event. He lost his temper and with that, his ability to play well.
An older golfer advised the young Jones and told him by telling him that he would never win until he learned to control his temper. Jones took the advice and began working on controlling his emotions. He blossomed to become one of the greatest golfers in the history of the game.
Genesis 4:3-7
And in the course of time Cain brought to the Lord an offering of the fruit of the ground. And Abel brought of the firstborn of his flock and of the fat portions. And the Lord had respect and regard for Abel and for his offering,But for [a]Cain and his offering He had no respect or regard. So Cain was exceedingly angry andindignant, and he looked sad and depressed. And the Lord said to Cain, Why are you angry? And why do you look sad and depressed and dejected? If you do well, will you not be accepted? And if you do not do well, sin crouches at your door; its desire is for you, but you must master it.
We all know the story of Cain and what he did to his brother. Cain was a man who could not control his emotions and just like God warned him sin got the best of him.
Are you able to discipline your emotions or do they make you lose your cool?
As I thought about this I was reminded of the incident where a high ranking government official pulled out a gun on a security guard an it all boils down to not being able to discipline our emotions. How many marriages and relationships get ruined because one party cannot manage and discipline their emotions? I have been to meetings where leaders in the church got offended because they were not allowed to sit in a particular area and in the process they do not manage their emotions well and the situation becomes ugly.
Manage your emotions because if you do not they will get the better of you and lead you into sin just like Cain.
Remember Galatians 5:17 says
For the desires of the flesh are against the Spirit, and the desires of the Spirit are against the flesh, for these are opposed to each other, to keep you from doing the things you want to do.
