The Three parts of Faith

Image
The Three parts of Faith There are three parts to faith that I like to explain using the acronym “KAT.” “K” stands for “Knowledge.”   We must know what the Bible says. We must understand that God sent his Son to die on the cross for our sin. And we must understand that only through trusting Jesus can we have a relationship with the living God. “A” stands for “Agreement.”   Not only must we know what the Bible says but we must agree with it. We must agree that eternal life will be ours if we place our trust in Jesus. There are many people who understand that they are separated from God by their sin and that God sent his Son to die on their behalf. They also agree that if they would trust in Jesus they would have an eternal relationship with God. That’s great as far as it goes, but it is not saving faith. There is one thing left to do. The “T” stands for “Trust.”   We must trust Jesus as the One who paid the penalty of our sin. We must trust him as the only wa...

Her Worst Day Ever

Her Worst Day Ever I will speak in the anguish of my spirit; I will complain in the bitterness of my soul. —Job 7:11 In May 2011, a young woman took cover in a bathtub during a tornado that devastated her city of Joplin, Missouri. Her husband covered her body with his and took the blows from flying debris. He died, and she survived because of his heroism. She naturally wrestles with the question, “Why?” But a year after the tornado, she said that she finds comfort because even on her worst day ever, she was loved. When I think about “worst days ever,” I think of Job right away. A man who loved God, he lost his animals, his servants, and his 10 children in one day! (Job 1:13-19). Job mourned deeply, and he also asked the “Why?” questions. He cried out, “Have I sinned? What have I done to You . . . ? Why have You set me as Your target?” (7:20). Job’s friends accused him of sinning and thought he deserved his difficulties, but God said of his friends: “You have not spoken of Me wha...

Emotional PORN

Image
The Truth About Emotional PORN Sexually oriented pornography is a multibillion dollar industry annually in the United States. It is estimated that every second, $3,075.64 is spent on sexually explicit material. Nearly 25 percent of total Internet search engine requests (i.e. Google, Yahoo) are pornographic in nature, totaling approximately 68 million hits per day. The average age of first exposure to pornographic material is estimated at 11 years old. The societal, relational and financial costs of pornography are staggering. According to the National Coalition for the Protection of Children and Families, 47 percent of families in the United States reported that pornography is a problem in their home. The same study shows that the consistent viewing of sexually explicit material increases the marital infidelity rate by more than 300 percent. While 40 percent of “sex addicts” lose their spouses, 58 percent suffer considerable financial losses and one-third lose their jobs. On a ...

The Forgiveness God Offers

Image
Jesus covers even that sin you think is beyond forgiveness. Do you sometimes find it difficult to believe that you have total forgiveness for your sins in Jesus Christ? Intellectually you believe it, but how about deep within your heart? Imagine yourself in the crowd as this story takes place as recorded in the Book of Luke: Some men came carrying a paralysed man on a sleeping mat. Seeing their faith, Jesus said to the man, "My friend, your sins are forgiven!" "Who does this fellow think he is?" the Pharisees and teachers of the Law exclaimed among themselves. "This is blasphemy! Who but God can forgive sins?" Jesus knew what they were thinking, and He replied, "Why is it blasphemy? I, the Messiah, have the authority on earth to forgive sins...I'll prove it to you by healing this man." Then, turning to the paralyzed man, he commanded, "Pick up your stretcher and go on home, for you are healed!" (Luke 5:18-20,24, The Liv...

Today's Promise

Real Freedom "If the Son therefore shall make you free, you shall be free indeed" (John 8:36, KJV). A dedicated, but defeated, young missionary returned from the field devastated because of his failure; first, to live the Christian life; and second, to introduce others to the Savior. He came to my office for counsel. I explained to him that the Christian life is simply a matter of surrendering our lives to the risen Christ and appropriating the fullness of God's Holy Spirit by faith. "Relax," I said. "Let the Lord Jesus Christ live and love through you. Let Him seek and save the lost through your life." He became very impatient with me. "You dilute and distort the gospel," he insisted. "It really costs to serve Jesus. I have made great sacrifices on the mission field. I have worked day and night. I struggled. It has cost me my health - though I am prepared to die for Christ - but you make it too easy, and I cannot accept what you...

Bold prayers honor God

Image
Prayers that Honour God “Bold prayers honour God, and God honours bold prayers. God isn't offended by your biggest dreams or boldest prayers. He is offended by anything less. If your prayers aren't impossible to you, they are insulting to God. Prayers are prophecies. They are the best predictors of your spiritual future. Who you become is determined by how you pray. Ultimately, the transcript of your prayers becomes the script of your life. The greatest tragedy in life is the prayers that go unanswered because they go unasked. God does not answer vague prayers. The more specific your prayers are, the more glory God receives. Most of us don’t get what we want because we quit praying. We give up too easily. We give up too soon. We quit praying right before the miracle happens. If you don’t take the risk, you forfeit the miracle. Take a step of faith when God gives you a vision because you trust that the One who gave you the vision is going to make provision. And...

Confronting Fear

Confronting Fear Fear is inevitable. How we deal with our fear – that is the issue. Will we become spiritually paralyzed, refusing to embrace what God has for us? Will we run away from God to find our comfort in unhealthy places, or will we erupt like a volcano burning everyone in our path with harmful words and actions? David, the man after God’s own heart, experienced a heart full of fear. He spent ten years running from Saul, fearing for his life. He engaged in battle with the adrenaline popping through his body. He was captured by the Philistines (now that would scare anyone), but through all that David had to confront his fear. In Psalm 34:4 he wrote, “I sought the Lord, and he answered me; he delivered me from all my fears.” David was relieved of his fears when he sought the Lord. Here are five ways seek God and confront our fears. 1. Read his Word. Find a quiet place to be alone with God. Ask him to speak to your heart. Tell him what is bringing on the anxiety. Then ...

Am I still a believer

Image
Am I still a believer? Maybe you knew someone who was really excited about their walk with God in college, and now they are living far from God. In fact, their life is a mess. By their own admission, they don’t want anything to do with God. Are they still a believer? Honestly, I’m not sure. But here are some possibilities: It is possible that your friend made a false profession.  Maybe their profession was based on peer pressure, or it was a hoop to jump through for them to get married. Maybe they were just a short-term enthusiast. But if there was no root, there couldn’t be any life. Jesus tells us about these types of people: The one who received the seed that fell on rocky places is the man who hears the word and at once receives it with joy. But since he has no root, he lasts only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, he quickly falls away. The one who received the seed that fell among the thorns is the man who hears the word, b...

Fear of Uncertainty: Wait | Psalm 27:14

Image
Fear of Uncertainty: Wait | Psalm 27:14 Psalm 27:14 - Wait for the LORD; be strong and take heart and wait for the LORD. The fear of uncertainty causes us to run . . . fast. We run to places we think will bring comfort. We run to places where the pain can be dulled, at least for a while. These are unhealthy places that deliver short-lived satisfaction and false hope. God has a different prescription for uncertainty. He tells us to stay put. He calls us to wait for the confidence. When we feel like bolting, he says, “Be strong.” When our courage is melting like hot wax, he says, “Take heart.” Spurgeon wrote, “Wait at his door with prayer; wait at his foot with humility; wait at his table with service; wait at his window with expectancy.” Our waiting is not passing time for God to arrive from a distant place; he is always present with us. Our waiting is not to give God time to determine his plan of action. God is waiting for us to wait on him. Prayer Father, it is so hard t...

Effective and Productive

Effective and Productive 2 Peter 1:5-90 2 Peter 1:5-9  For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love. For if you possess these qualities in increasing measure, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. But if anyone does not have them, he is near-sighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins. Recently, I officiated a memorial service for Lois, a believer who lived her days following hard after Christ. One word that described her entire life was “service.” Not long before this dear saint’s passing, her daughter-in-law took several of Lois’ great-grandchildren to visit her in a care facility. They became worried when she was not in her room and began searching for...
