How Do I Confront Sin in Others? | Matthew 18:15-17 Matthew 18:15-17 If your brother or sister sins, go and point out their fault, just between the two of you. If they listen to you, you have won them over. But if they will not listen, take one or two others along, so that ‘every matter may be established by the testimony of two or three witnesses.’ If they still refuse to listen, tell it to the church; and if they refuse to listen even to the church, treat them as you would a pagan or a tax collector. Confronting sin in others is so important that Jesus gives us a step-by-step process. Let’s take a few days this week to consider each step. Confronting Others: Step 1 Too often a person’s sin is entered into a string of e-mails or shows up on a social media site. Without full knowledge of the situation, the rumors fly. That is not the plan that Jesus had in mind. If a person sins and I see it, learn of it or it is against me, I am to go to that person and share what I have...

Trusting God in Tough Times

Image
Trusting God in Tough Times Why ? I've  experienced my share of asking God why. I’m guessing that you, like Job, have too. And wow, Job used the word “trouble” frequently! He definitely had reason to do so, as he lost everything he had and his wife wanted him to curse God and die. Things had gotten that bad! While Job is well-known for his trust in God, for a few chapters, he boldly asks the big question to God that we all ask when we just don’t understand. Be encouraged; we may not understand why now, but someday we will. Until then, claim His Word- God always keeps His Promises. May the LORD answer you in the day of trouble! May the name of the God of Jacob protect you! Psalm 20:1 But let all who take refuge in you rejoice; let them ever sing for joy, and spread your protection over them, that those who love your name may exult in you. Psalm 5:11 Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge hi...

A Biblically-Managed Life: The Seven Day Challenge – Day 3

A Biblicaly-Managed Life: The Seven Day Challenge  Day 3 Because a biblicaly-managed life depends on maintaining an eternal perspective while living in a temporal world, we must consistently examine our lives. I will be posting in the coming days seven areas for self-evaluation. I am asking you to consider one area each day for the next seven days. Read the questions and the Scripture in the morning and then reflect throughout the day. Keep a journal to record your thoughts and the thing that God tells you. Today is the third day. DAY 3: God’s Gift of Resources Someone said that the best way to examine your spiritual life is to examine your checkbook. The things we spend our money on tell a lot about us. The Bible says that God owns all things. Everything we have is a gift from Him. Everything He gives us should be used for His eternal purposes. Read the passages below and spend some time today talking to God and recording your thoughts regarding your handling of H...

DAY 2: God’s Gift of Time How are you managing your time? Are you investing it or wasting it? C. S. Lewis said, “There is no neutral ground in the universe: Every square inch, every split second, is claimed by God and counterclaimed by Satan.” Use today to determine if you are using God’s gift of time wisely. Read the passages and the Sanders quote below. Ask God to help you make the most of your time. Show me, LORD, my life’s end and the ...

Are You Surrounded by Acquaintances or Friends?

Image
Life was never meant to be lived solo. There are way too many challenging times and dangerous detours to make the journey alone. Solomon said, “Two are better than one … Pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!” ( Ecclesiastes 4:9 ) But far too many believers are surrounded by acquaintances rather than true friends. Here are three characteristics of true friendship. 1. True friends are loyal. Fair weather acquaintances come and go. They are circumstantial and situational connections. They are with you only in times of common activity and convenience. They are around as long as you have something they need. But a true friend “loves at all times;” they “stick closer than a brother” ( Proverbs 17:17 ; 18:28).   2. True friends experience faith. Drinking buddies are a dime a dozen. Recreational friends are there for the game. But true friends share a deep commitment to Christ. That spiritual connection develops a bond. The relationship is rich beca...

Framework of Faith: Romans

Romans: Framework of Faith – No Condemnation  Theme— Romans 1:16-17 Sin— Romans 1:18-3 :20 Salvation— Romans 3:21-5 :21 Spiritual Growth (Sanctification)  Romans 6-8 Romans 7:15-18 I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do I do not do, but what I hate I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. As it is, it is no longer I myself who do it, but it is sin living in me. I know that nothing good lives in me, that is, in my sinful nature. For I have the desire to do what is good, but I cannot carry it out. Romans 7:25 Thanks be to God—through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself in my mind am a slave to God’s law, but in the sinful nature a slave to the law of sin. The potential or possibility to win every spiritual battle comes through Jesus Christ—his work on the cross and his Spirit that lives within me. Romans 8:1-3 Therefore, there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus, because through Christ Jes...

A Biblically-Managed Life: The Seven Day Challenge – Day 1

A Biblical y-Managed Life: The Seven Day Challenge – Day 1: Because a biblicaly-managed life depends on maintaining an eternal perspective while living in a temporal world, we must consistently examine our lives. Read the questions and the Scripture in the morning and then reflect throughout the day. Keep a journal to record your thoughts and the things that God tells you.   DAY 1: Investing My Life   By the grace God has given me, I laid a foundation as a wise builder, and someone else is building on it. But each one should build with care. For no one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ. If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, ...

Developing Followers of Christ | Courage: A New Beginning

Image
Joshua 1:9 Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go. Today marks the beginning of a four part series on COURAGE. Courage is essential because there will often be times in our journey with Jesus that he will ask us to do things outside of our normal areas of comfort. In those moments of challenge we have a decision to make. Will we follow his lead or will we recoil in fear and take our own path. Courage is required along the pathway of obedience. Specifically, courage is required when God brings us to a place of a new beginning.  Joshua 1:9 is a favorite verse of mine. It resonates deeply for those who have come to a season of life where a new beginning is required. Notice that God COMMANDED Joshua to “Be strong and courageous.” Why do you think God had to command Joshua to have courage? I believe God had to say it because Joshua was not feeling it! Moses, the great l...

Some actions I can take on earth while I wait for my eternity

What are some of the things that we can take into eternity with us? The following list is far from exhaustive, but it provides a few examples: Bringing people to Christ For what is our hope, our joy, or the crown in which we will glory in the presence of our Lord Jesus when he comes? Is it not you? Indeed,  you are our glory and joy. -1 Thessalonians 2:19-20 Eagerly awaiting the Second Coming Now there is in store for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on that day—and not only to me, but also to all who have longed for his appearing. - 2 Timothy 4:8 Enduring difficult trials Blessed is the man who perseveres under trial, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. - James 1:12 Providing faithful Christian leadership To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in...

Truths Smart People Forget

Image
Some of the smartest people I know continuously struggle to get ahead because they forget to address a few simple truths that collectively govern our potential to make progress.  So here’s a quick reminder: #1 – Education and intelligence accomplish nothing without action. It doesn’t matter if you have a genius IQ and a PhD in Quantum Physics, you can’t change anything or make any sort of real-world progress without taking action.  There’s a huge difference between knowing how to do something and actually doing it.  Knowledge and intelligence are both useless without action.  It’s as simple as that.  For some practical guidance on taking action, I highly recommend  The Now Habit . #2 – Happiness and success are two different things. I know an extremely savvy businesswoman who made almost a million dollars online last year. Every entrepreneur I know considers her to be wildly successful.  But guess what?  A few days ago, out of the blue, ...
